- A pilot study involving US military veterans who were experiencing severe PTSD and were not helped by other therapies found that many of them saw relief when given psilocybin, the active ingredient in "magic mushrooms."
- In the trial of 12 vets who participated in eight hours of talk therapy and two psilocybin doses given two to three weeks apart, 75% experienced remission in a follow-up one month after final treatment.
- Researchers noted that during treatment, they did not observe an increase in suicidal ideation or behavior, while heart rate and blood pressure remained in the normal range during psilocybin treatment.
- "Findings reveal that PAT is safe, well-tolerated, and shows preliminary clinical improvement for PTSD, suggesting that PAT may offer therapeutic relief for veterans with severe treatment-resistant PTSD," the authors concluded in the journal Communications Medicine.
- Earlier in July, HHS and the Veterans Administration signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at increasing R&D on psychedelic treatment for mental health disorders.
