Valneva SE (VALN) is down ~5% in after-hours trading Wednesday after it announced that the UK's Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency revoked the marketing authorization for Ixchiq, its chikungunya virus vaccine, over safety concerns.
The vaccine was launched in the UK in mid-2025 but has been hampered by low sales. It has not been actively distributed in the country in several months.
Valneva said it would not appeal the decision and expects a minimal financial impact.
The company defended Ixchiq, saying that an ongoing pilot vaccination strategy in Brazil of more 61,000 vaccinations has found no new safety concerns identified.
Ixchiq is still available in the EU, Canada, and Brazil. In August 2025, the US FDA suspended the vaccine's license, citing serious adverse events, such as chikungunya-like illness, hospitalizations, and deaths.
