Pediatric neurologist John Gaitanis is the new chair of the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee, replacing Sylvia Fogel, who had headed the panel since January.
Gaitanis is also director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD). Fogel, a psychiatrist who teaches at Harvard Medical School, will remain on the committee.
HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made the change as the IACC is typically chaired by one of its 21 federal members rather than one of its 20 public members, Reuters reported, citing individuals familiar with the situation.
"The committee determined ⁠that having a federal representative serve as chair will strengthen its focus on implementing the IACC Strategic Plan and coordinating efforts across federal agencies," spokesperson Emily Hillard told the news service.
The IACC last met in late August when that plan, which would significantly increase funding for medical care and other support for those with autism, was discussed.
