- BioMarin Pharmaceutical (BMRN) on Tuesday announced an agreement to acquire Alesta Therapeutics to gain access to the Dutch biotech’s lead asset, ALE1, which targets a rare disorder called hypophosphatasia.
- As part of the deal, San Rafael, California-based BioMarin (BMRN) will acquire Alesta by paying $275M upfront and up to $215M in additional payments, subject to the achievement of certain development and regulatory milestones.
- Before the deal closes, Alesta is expected to spin out its non-ALE1 assets to a new entity that will house its existing employees.
- An oral treatment, ALE1, is currently undergoing a Phase 1/2a clinical trial to assess its safety and efficacy in healthy volunteers and adults with HPP. A genetic condition, HPP is characterized by frequent bone breaks and tooth loss as well as muscle weakness, fatigue, and pain in adults.
