Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) wants President Trump to think again about potentially rescheduling marijuana to a less harmful drug, calling cannabis a "gateway drug."
"Most of the people who end up using hard substances start out on marijuana," the lawmaker said Monday on NewsNation's The Hill podcast.
He added the amount of THC -- the key psychoactive component of cannabis -- in marijuana today is much higher than it was 30 or 40 years ago.
On Monday, the president confirmed he is looking at issuing an Executive Order moving marijuana to Schedule III from Schedule I under the Controlled Substances Act.
Most cannabis multi-state operators are up double-digit percentages in Tuesday trading.
