- The U.S. Senate on Tuesday confirmed Susan Monarez as director of the CDC. She has been serving as acting director since President Trump began his second term in January.
- The vote was 51-47 along party lines.
- She previously served as deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health.
- Monarez was not Trump's first choice to head the CDC. In March, the president pulled the nomination of former congressman Dave Weldon after it became clear he would face a contentious Senate confirmation hearing due to his anti-vaccine views.
- During her confirmation hearing in June, Monarez, responding to a question from a senator, stated she has seen no evidence that links vaccines to autism.
