Although most quantum computing stocks saw muted gains on Thursday, Arqit Quantum (NASDAQ:ARQQ) bucked the trend, rising on heavy volume.
Shares of the U.K.-based company jumped more than 38% shortly after 12 p.m. EST. More than 3.3M shares changed hands, more than four times the average daily volume of just over 800,000. No apparent catalyst could be found to explain the move.
Other quantum computing stocks, such as IonQ (NYSE:IONQ) and D-Wave Quantum (NYSE:QBTS), saw more modest gains, up 0.5% and 4.8%, respectively. Conversely, Quantum Computing (NASDAQ:QUBT) fell around 3.5%.
The industry has made heady gains in recent days, even as Rigetti Computing (RGTI) CEO Dr. Subodh Kulkarni said the company and the industry have to "tamp down expectations."
Despite Kulkarni's attempt to curb investors' enthusiasm, tech stalwart Nvidia (NVDA) said on Wednesday that it will hold its first-ever quantum event at its flagship GTC conference in March. Separately, Microsoft (MSFT) unveiled its new Quantum Ready program.
