- OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has hired Dr. Aaron "Ronnie" Chatterji to be the generative artificial intelligence startup's first chief economist in an effort to better understand the economic impact of AI.
- Dr. Chatterji is currently a professor of business and public policy at Duke University professor and was part of the Biden administration, where he helped coordinate the CHIPs Act.
- “My career has focused on studying how innovation and entrepreneurship shape our economy and society, and I am excited to apply my skills to support OpenAI’s mission to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence are widely distributed,” Dr. Chatterji said in a statement. “I look forward to contributing to research that helps inform how we transition to an AI-driven economy.”
- OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and others, said it hopes Dr. Chatterji's research will help "inform efforts by policymakers, academics, and organizations around the world to maximize the benefits of AI as an economic driver in their communities, while helping them identify and prepare for challenges that come with the adoption of this powerful new technology."
- OpenAI announced earlier this month that it raised $6.6B in new funding, valuing the company at $157B.
