12:36 PM EDT, 06/16/2022 (MT Newswires) -- PulteGroup (PHM) shares were down nearly 8% in midday trading Thursday, leading a slump among homebuilder stocks after a US housing starts report came in well below forecasts.
According to the US Commerce Department, starts of new homes were down 14.4% in May to 1.549 million units after an upward revision to 1.810 million units in April, while starts are down 3.5% compared with a year ago. This was significantly below an Econoday survey of forecasters with a consensus of 1.695 million units.

Shares of homebuilders NVR, Inc. (NVR), Lennar Corporation (LEN), and Toll Brothers, Inc. (TOL) were down 6.9%, 7%, and 6.5% respectively. Meanwhile home improvement retailers Lowe's Companies, Inc. (LOW) and The Home Depot, Inc. (HD) fell 4.3% and 2.8% respectively.
