Qualcomm (QCOM) said on Wednesday that it is acquiring robotics software firm PickNik to boost its presence in physical AI and robotics.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it is subject to customary closing conditions.
PickNik is the owner of MoveIt, an open-source robotics manipulation framework. Following the acquisition, Qualcomm said MoveIt will integrate with its own Dragonwin Robotics and Arduino platforms to help build the next generation of robots. MoveIt 1 and MoveIt 2 will remain open source and have support for third-party hardware platforms, Qualcomm added.
“Robotics is one of the most exciting frontiers of physical AI, and software is the connective tissue that turns great hardware into great robots,” said Qualcomm executive Nakul Duggal in a statement. “PickNik has earned tremendous trust within the global robotics community through its stewardship of MoveIt and its commitment to open-source innovation. Together, we plan to make it easier for developers to build advanced robotic applications on Dragonwing robotics platforms, while continuing to support the openness and collaboration that have made MoveIt successful.”
Qualcomm shares were little changed in premarket trading.
