2026-08-28 21:25
- Novavax (NVAX) on Friday announced that the U.S., European Union, and Japan have approved the updated versions of its COVID-19 vaccine Nuvaxovid, developed with partners Sanofi (ANY) and Takeda (TAK), globally.
- The approval for the protein-based shot adjusted for the currently dominant SARS-CoV-2 XFG variant of COVID comes ahead of the 2026-2027 vaccination season in those major markets, the Maryland-area biotech said.
- Under a 2024 partnership, Novavax (NVAX) is entitled to receive royalties from Sanofi (SNY), which leads commercial activities for Nuvaxovid in countries such as the U.S., Germany, and Canada.
- Takeda (TAK), which commercializes Nuvaxovid in Japan, is also required to pay annual milestones linked to regulatory approvals and royalties on net sales of the vaccine.
- Late Thursday, Pfizer (PFE)/ BioNTech (BNTX) and Moderna (MRNA) also announced FDA approval of their messenger-RNA-based COVID-19 shots adjusted for XFG variant.
