The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has granted an emergency use authorization for Elanco Animal Health’s (ELAN) antiparasitic therapy CLiK Extra as a treatment to prevent new world screwworm infestations.
The authorization came after the Department of Agriculture detected the first U.S. animal case of NWS in June in Texas amid an ongoing outbreak of the parasitic infestation in Central American countries and Mexico.
The EUA permits the sale of CLiK Extra over the counter as a wound spray for topical use in sheep, cattle, goats, swine, and camels, as well as captive and captured wild animals such as deer and American bison, the FDA said.
“Today's emergency use authorization provides a new tool for preventing the spread of New World screwworm infestations, and we will continue to work to combat this threatening pest,” added the acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas.
