Canaan (CAN) said on Tuesday it has launched a 3 megawatt proof-of-concept project in Manitoba, Canada, to recover heat from its computing systems for use in greenhouse operations.
The project, conducted with Bitforest Investment Ltd, will deploy liquid-cooled Avalon computing servers to supply supplemental heat to a greenhouse by preheating water for electric boilers through a closed-loop heat exchange system. The initial term of the agreement is 24 months.
Canaan said it expects about 90% of the electricity consumed by the computing servers to be captured and reused as heat, subject to actual operating conditions.
The company said the pilot is part of its broader effort to improve energy efficiency and evaluate agricultural applications for compute heat recovery.
