The U.S. box office surged to an estimated $154 million over the Dec. 5–7 weekend, driven by a massive debut from Universal’s (CMCSA) Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and strong holds from family and franchise titles, according to Comscore.
Year-to-date domestic ticket sales now stand at approximately $8.015 billion, putting 2025 0.82% ahead of last year through Sunday, Comscore said.
Universal (CMCSA) claimed the top spot as Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 roared to a $63 million domestic opening from 3,412 theaters, delivering a robust per-theater average of $18,464. The Blumhouse sequel also posted a strong international launch, opening in 76 markets and pushing its estimated global weekend haul to $109 million. The original Five Nights at Freddy’s debuted to $80 million in 2023 and went on to gross nearly $300 million worldwide.
GKIDS landed the weekend’s second-highest opening with anime event title JUJUTSU KAISEN: Execution, which debuted in fourth place with $10.15 million from 1,833 locations. The release capitalized on strong fan demand with a per-theater average above $5,500.
Lionsgate (LION) made a splash with Quentin Tarantino’s long-anticipated Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair, which earned $3.25 million in limited but premium engagement, including multiple 70mm presentations across major North American cities.
Among specialty releases, Moviegoers’ Dhurandhar posted a solid $1.93 million debut from 390 theaters, while Sony Pictures Classics’ (SONY) Merrily We Roll Along and Bleecker Street’s Fackham Hall posted more modest nationwide openings.
Holdovers remained a major force. Disney’s (DIS) Zootopia 2 delivered another $43 million in its second weekend, lifting its domestic total to $220.5 million and pushing global box office close to $916 million after just two frames. Universal’s (CMCSA) Wicked: For Good continued its strong run with $16.75 million in weekend three, nearing $300 million domestically.
A24’s Eternity and Focus Features’ (CMCSA) Hamnet both expanded significantly in their second weekends, while IMAX (IMAX) reported strong premium-format contributions led again by Zootopia 2.
