OpenAI, Oracle to bring Stargate to Michigan

OpenAI (OPENAI) and Oracle (ORCL) announced late on Thursday that they will be expanding the Stargate artificial intelligence project and bringing data centers to Michigan.

The Stargate Michigan campus is being developed by real estate development firm Related Digital⁠, OpenAI said, with construction starting early next year. It will use a closed-loop cooling system that “significantly” reduces water consumption and DTE Energy (DTE) will bring energy to the campus using existing excess transmission capacity. 

“The infrastructure and manufacturing needed to advance AI give us a real chance to reindustrialize⁠ the country, and it should happen in places like Michigan,” OpenAI said in a statement. “AI will unlock major benefits—from better healthcare to improved public services—and the buildout required to get there will generate significant opportunities along the way. We're investing through Stargate to help ensure communities across the country benefit both from building AI infrastructure and from all of the progress that AI itself makes possible.”

The Michigan data center campus is the seventh Stargate project announced in the U.S., along with sites in Texas and elsewhere.

When combined, Stargate will have more than 8 gigawatts of planned capacity and see more than $450B in investment over a span of the next three year, OpenAI added.
