Trump cancels trade negotiations with Canada over Reagan ad

2025-10-24 13:42

U.S. President Donald Trump said Thursday night he is immediately ending all trade negotiations with Canada because the Ontario provincial government aired an ad featuring former President Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about tariffs.

"Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“The Ronald Reagan Foundation has just announced that Canada has fraudulently used an advertisement, which is FAKE, featuring Ronald Reagan speaking negatively about Tariffs,” the post said.

His announcement accused Canada of trying to influence a pending U.S. Supreme Court case that could doom many of his tariffs, including ones on Canada.

"The ad misrepresents the Presidential Radio Address (by Reagan in 1987), and the Government of Ontario did not seek nor receive permission to use and edit the remarks," the foundation said in its statement.

Trump imposed a 35% levy on Canadian imports in August, although he has allowed exemptions for goods that fall under the USMCA—a free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada that Trump negotiated during his first term.

The two sides have been in talks for weeks on a potential deal for the steel and aluminum sectors.
