Wabtec lands $4.2B locomotive deal with Kazakhstan’s railway

2025-09-23 03:18

Westinghouse Airbrake Technologies (NYSE:WAB), or Wabtec, secured a multiyear agreement worth $4.2 billion to supply locomotives and long-term maintenance services to Kazakhstan’s state railway, KTZ. The U.S. transport-technology company said Monday it will deliver units from its Evolution Series while also supporting fleet upkeep under the contract.

The deal expands a partnership between Wabtec (NYSE:WAB) and KTZ that spans more than 20 years. Chief Executive Rafael Santana said the order underscores Kazakhstan’s push to strengthen its rail system as a vital trade link between Europe and Asia.

The announcement followed a call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Trump hailed the agreement on his Truth Social platform, describing it as the largest railroad equipment purchase ever and calling for greater backing of America’s rail industry.

Santana added that the collaboration highlights Wabtec’s role in developing local engineering skills while supporting Kazakhstan’s broader infrastructure ambitions.
