Cuba’s fragile power grid suffered its fourth nationwide collapse in less than a year on Wednesday, leaving the island’s 10 million residents without electricity. Officials said the system went down just after 9 a.m. local time, with restoration efforts underway while the cause is investigated, according to multiple news reports.
Even before the latest failure, Cubans were enduring daily outages lasting up to 16 hours, as the country’s aging oil-fired plants struggle to operate amid dwindling fuel imports from Venezuela, Russia and Mexico. The blackouts have compounded shortages of food and other essentials, deepening what many describe as Cuba’s worst economic crisis in decades.
