BHP (NYSE:BHP) is heading a global consortium of major steelmakers and energy companies to investigate carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) opportunities across Asia, with a focus on reducing emissions from hard-to-abate sectors like steelmaking.
The consortium includes ArcelorMittal (MT), Nippon Steel India (OTCPK:NPSCY) (OTCPK:NISTF), JSW Steel, Hyundai Steel, Chevron (CVX), and Mitsui & Co. (OTCPK:MITSY) (OTCPK:MITSF) with project management provided by Hatch.
The project is notable for its cross-industry collaboration, leveraging expertise from mining, steel production, and energy to overcome financial, regulatory, and technical barriers in deploying CCUS. The project reflects a shift in BHP (NYSE:BHP) strategy from individual business approaches to collaborative solutions.
Each participant may be included in at least one potential CCUS hub, with conceptual development strategies covering cost, schedule, and commercialization for each hub.
The scope includes evaluating technical and commercial pathways to implement large-scale CCUS, including transport and storage of CO₂ via pipelines or shipping across Asia and Northern Australia.
