- Frederick W. Smith, the founder and executive chairman of FedEx (NYSE:FDX), died on Saturday. He was 80.
- Smith founded the air delivery service in 1971 with operations beginning in 1973. He stepped down as CEO in 2022.
- Smith came up with the idea for FedEx, formerly known as Federal Express, in a term paper while an undergrad at Yale University.
- "Fred was more than just the pioneer of an industry and the founder of our great company," CEO Raj Subramaniam said in a memo to employees. "He was the heart and soul of FedEx – its PSP culture, values, integrity, and spirit. He was a mentor to many and a source of inspiration to all."
