Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) has filed a civil suit against Anthropic for allegedly using the social media company's data without a licensing agreement, according to the Wall Street Journal.
"Anthropic is in fact intentionally trained on the personal data of Reddit users without ever requesting their consent," the complaint said, which was filed today in a federal district court in California, according to the report.
Reddit contends they attempted to reach an agreement with Anthropic, creator of the Claude family of large language models, but failed, the report said. Instead, Reddit alleges Anthropic's bots continued to hit its servers more than 100,000 times.
Reddit has entered into agreements with Google (GOOG)(GOOGL) and OpenAI for training AI models.
Shares of Reddit jumped 7.5% by afternoon trading on Wednesday.
Seeking Alpha reached out to Anthropic for comment.
Last month, Anthropic released its next generation of Claude models called Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4 for coding, advanced reasoning, and AI agents.
