Oppenheimer analysts feel most bullish about industrials (NYSEARCA:XLI), financials (XLF), and technology (XLK) due to the sectors’ relative strength.
Ari H. Wald, chief financial analyst at Oppenheimer, also said that his team is bullish on higher beta outperforming stocks compared to low-volatility, low-momentum stocks.
Within industrials, Wald highlighted the Global X US Infrastructure Development ETF (PAVE) as a top idea, and Mueller Water Products (MWA), Acuity Brands (AYI), Zurn Elkay Water Solutions (ZWS), and Esab (ESAB) as top stock ideas.
Within financials (XLF), Wald mentioned capital markets and the SPDR S&P Capital Markets ETF (KCE) as a top idea, representing high momentum. Among top stocks, he mentioned Carlyle Group (CG), Shift4 Payments (FOUR), Hamilton Lane (HLNE), and Nasdaq (NDAQ).
About capital markets (KCE), he said “the recent consolidation is allowing prior excesses to recede ahead of a resumption of longer-term strength," and that “the broadness of bottom-up leadership adds to our confidence.”
Within technology (XLK), the favored subsector is software, highlighting the iShares Software ETF (IGV).
This group has “reclaimed a leadership role following the U.S. election, and six weeks of consolidation has offered a tactical opportunity to increase exposure, in our view,” said Wald, adding that “this near-term setback has maintained a multi-year breakout on both an absolute and relative basis.”
The stocks he mentioned included HubSpot (HUBS), Fair Isaac (FICO), Atlassian (TEAM), and Cloudflare (NET).
He also said that large-cap growth stocks have been showing signs of resuming higher on both an absolute and relative basis.
“While a rotation into non-growth would be a net-positive for the bull cycle, we think the steadiness of large-cap growth remains the more attractive risk/reward idea at this stage of the cycle,” he said.
His top ETF Idea is the iShares Russell 1000 Growth (IWF), and his top stock ideas include Amazon (AMZN), ServiceNow (NOW), Booking Holdings (BKNG), and Live Nation Entertainment (LYV).
Lastly, Wald mentioned four miscellaneous buy-rated stocks: Crane NXT (CXT), Flutter Entertainment (FLUT), SharkNinja (SN), and Turtle Beach (TBCH).
