Biden Impeachment Inquiry Weakest In US History, Say Experts: 'Absolutely Shocking'

An impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, concerning his son Hunter’s foreign business affairs, has been announced by Speaker Kevin McCarthy. However, experts argue that the evidence against Biden is weaker than in any previous impeachment inquiry, Time reported. 

Only three U.S. Presidents have faced impeachment so far; Andrew Johnson, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump. Two experts on impeachment, Philip Bobbitt and Frank Bowman, believe that the current impeachment inquiry into Biden lacks substantial evidence and can weaken the federal system of checks and balances

Bobbitt, a constitutional scholar and a Columbia Law School professor, stated, “I honestly don’t know that there is any evidence tying the president to corrupt activities when he was vice president or now.”

Frank Bowman, Professor Emeritus at the University of Missouri School of Law, shared a similar sentiment.

"What they’re doing here is absolutely shocking," said Bowman.

He added that House Republicans "have no interest at all in preserving the basic integrity of the process, or indeed their own power as legislators in legitimate opposition and tension with the executive branch."

The impeachment process typically commences with an inquiry. However, the rules defining an impeachment inquiry are not well defined. Historically, evidence of misconduct has been present before the launch of a formal inquiry. In Biden’s case, however, the evidence does not seem to be substantial.

The Republicans have been investigating Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden throughout the year in the hopes of proving Joe Biden profited from his son’s business affairs. However, so far, no conclusive evidence has been found implicating the president.

McCarthy’s decision to open an inquiry without a vote has precedence. However, the Republicans had previously criticized this approach when the Democrats had done the same against Trump in 2019.
